Late Pastor Sambo Bukbuk
Late Pastor Sambo Bukbuk was the first Tangale native pastor. He was born in 1900 and was believed to be 17 years old when the missionaries first reached and opened up a missionary station at Kaltungo in 1917.
His first contact with Christianity was through Baba Karga of Kaltungo, whose preaching and teaching of the gospel resulted in the expansion from Kaltungo to other neighboring towns. Baba Karga worked in Tangale from 1922 – 1927 though with much ease, made impacts, and brought in new converts to the fold. Among those early converts of Baba Karga, was Sambo Bukbuk.
His conversion to Christianity was through a vision where Christ was revealed to him.
As a very humble person, he learned how to read and write under the watchful eyes of Mr. Harry Harling (Pobe). His ability to grasp whatever he was taught was so impressive that “Pope” did not hesitate to appoint him as the first native Pastor when the need came up.
He was ordained Pastor in 1947 together with Karga the man who led him to Christ. His work in the land after his ordination was to mark him as a very hardworking minister of the gospel who established many Churches in Tangale and the sub-stations of Tangale. He carried out most of this work trekking the length and breadth of Tangale land on foot.
He died at the prime age of his service in 1960. The epitaph on his grave reads Sambo “Sabok Yamba” (God’s Servant).
