Late Mr. Yila Matayo Maikano

Late Mr. Yila Matayo Maikano was Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi from 1999 until he passed on in 2003 – he died in active service. It is a fact that most of the successes recorded at the institution have Maikano’s imprint on them, hence the naming of one of the staff quarters after him.

Many graduates of the school from Gombe State would remember him as instrumental to their admission to the institution. His tenure at the institution witnessed a large influx of Tangale sons and daughters into the school. He also played the fatherly role of ensuring Tangale students had everything related to the progress of their studies at their disposal.

Many described him as a man of many facets, and those close to him defined him as a ‘True Tangale Patriot’ who personified dedication to duties and love for the Tangale land.

Born on 10th March 1951 in Kulgul, Mr. Maikano attended the SIM Junior Primary School Kulgul and SIM Senior Primary School Kufai – Billiri from 1958 – 1964. He attended Government College Keffi from 1965 to 1971 for his secondary education before finally reading History at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria from 1972 to 1975.

Mr. Maikano also attended the University of Ibadan and the Staff College Blandon Bristol in England, where he attended Management and Technical Education courses.

He began work as a lecturer at the Bauchi College of Arts and Science (BACAS) Bauch from 1976 to 1980. He joined the employ of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi in 1980 as a Senior Assistant Registrar and steadily rose to the position of Registrar of the Institution.

Maikano held various leadership roles and chairmanship positions in different committees in Bauchi State as a personality of immense ability.

He was a member of the Historical Society of Nigeria, an Associate Member of the Nigeria Institute of Management, and a Member of the British Council Study Fellows.

For his contribution to the development of education in various sectors, Mai Tangle, Dr. Abdu Buba Maisheru II conferred on him the traditional title of ‘Zannan Tangale’ in 2022. Before that, he was named the ‘Jarman Tanglang’ in 1999 by the District Head of Tanglang.

He Married former Miss Babiya Tasha on 24th December 1977, and they were blessed with eight children.

Mr. Y. M. Maikano distinguished himself in all his positions and practically left printable marks on the memories of many who came in contact with him
